Few Canberrans would know 2013 marks another centenary: of the publication of H G Wells’ book “Little Wars”, the first book about wargames.
Wargames will be on the minds of the nearly 3000 people who will be at EPIC over the Australia Day long weekend for the Canberra Games Convention (CANCON), recreating battles from both history and the imagination. We’re also expecting almost 8000 spectators.
CANCON is the largest event of its kind in Australia. Already we’ve received entries from every state and territory, and some from overseas.
Visitors to CANCON are most welcome. Entry is free. A number of public participation games will be offered to introduce people to wargames, including recreations of the Battle of Isandlwana between the British and the Zulus, and a hypothetical Soviet invasion of Western Europe.
If you’d like to see wargames in action you’re welcome to visit the Canberra Games Society at its weekly meetings: Thurs, 8–11pm, Deakin Bridge Club, 6 Duff Place, Deakin.
