2013 not only marks Canberra's 100th birthday, but also marks the 80th anniversary of the birth and the 20th anniversary of the passing of Kevin Gilbert, a well-known Canberra identity, whose oil paintings include scenes of Canberra.
I Do Have a Belief is an exhibition and events celebrating the life of Kevin Gilbert and his contribution to the local community, advancing human and political rights and Aboriginal sovereignty at a national and international level. The showcasing of his creative work includes unseen oils, lino‑prints, published poetry, political works, and photographic murals.
I Do Have a Belief Kevin Gilbert (1933-1993) Art Retrospective from 28 March to 14 April 2013 at Belconnen Art Centre is an exhibition celebrating the creativity of Kevin Gilbert. Gilbert was a renowned Wiradjuri artist, poet and political activist; the first Aboriginal print-maker; and the first published Aboriginal playwright and political writer in Australia. This retrospective exhibition will include unseen oil paintings, lino-prints, poetry manuscripts, and political works and it will showcase the breadth of his artistic talents, his visions and aspirations.
A special event will be held on 6 April at the Belconnen Arts Centre from 5.30pm. Performances will be given by Aboriginal musicians including Bart Willoughby, Buddy Knox and Dale Huddleston.
