When is Canberra’s 100th birthday?
Canberra’s actual ‘birthday’ is celebrated on 12 March, the day the foundation stones were laid for a “Commencement Column” in 1913, and the new Australian capital was official named “Canberra” by Lady Denman, wife of the then Governor-General.
However, it should be noted that while 12 March 2013 will be a centrepiece for Centenary celebrations, the program of events and activities will run throughout the entire year.
What is the Centenary of Canberra?
In the simplest possible terms, the Centenary is Canberra’s 100th birthday. You can read more about the Centenary of Canberra here.
Will celebrations only be on Canberra’s birthday?
No, there will be a whole year of celebrations in 2013. Visit the Programs page for more information. A calendar of events is coming soon.
How has the program been developed?
The Centenary of Canberra program is curated by Creative Director Robyn Archer AO. Robyn has investigated and researched ideas from the community, organisations, individuals and cultural institutions, combined with her own original ideas and these have been developed by the Centenary Team in collaboration with many other participants.
Importantly, the program has been deliberately designed to not only include exciting new initiatives, but also to showcase what is already special about the region, and those events already happening in Canberra throughout each and every year.
What about outside the curated program?
There are hundreds of events that are happening throughout the year to celebrate Canberra’s centenary through the initiative and pride of local citizens. Community organisations can register their events on the Centenary of Canberra Celebration Events Calendar.
