ONE THOUSAND DAYS TO GO!
Wednesday, 16 June, 2010Yes folks, it’s 1000 to 100 – that is, one thousand days on the dot until marking the 100th anniversary of Canberra’s name day.
In 1000 days we will be partying like there’s no tomorrow. Except there will be a tomorrow. In fact there will be, at very least, another one hundred years for this city to go on being an incubator for the nation in so many ways – and that’s why the way we are preparing for the centenary celebrations in a very particular way.
Of course there will be a party around the long weekend which will end in a grand celebration on the eve ( March 11th) of our birthday and on the day itself, but we are hoping to invest our material and human resources in ways which see benefit a long time after that big marker. I am talking up Canberra all the way across the nation and in the wider world, and I often use the phrase:
“seed now, blossom in 2013, flower for another hundred years”
That’s the way we’re planning and the small Centenary team is hard at work to do this. This month we welcomed Canberrans Sarah Hitchcock and Nicole Canham into the team. Sarah’s heading up the unit, and Nicole, having just returned from a Churchill Fellowship, is giving us some very specialised advice about how our program can have extensions and outreach into education programs.
Cold ? What cold? We’re running hot and we’re very happy to keep it that way.
One thousand days – it feels like tomorrow
