Canberra is known as the nation’s capital city. It was chosen as the nation’s capital after Federation in 1901. It is located in the Australian Capital Territory in the northern end, just south-west of Sydney. It was established as a compromise following a rival between Sydney and Melbourne for the being the nation’s capital. Canberra is also Aboriginal land that was home to the Ngunnawal people for 21,000 years and is still home to many Aborigines today. The city is a major hub that sees many tourists every day from many different places. These, and other things, make Canberra a very interesting area for everyone and proves that it is more than just a capital city.

The garden city movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries influenced the cities design. Walter Burley Griffin, an influential man at the times, was so inspired by the movement that he incorporated it in his designs for the city. Griffin took part in the construction of the city, especially after there were changes made to his proposed designs by his opposition. Griffin spent a lot of time as an architect for the city and other areas throughout Australia. He moved to India in his later life to practice architecture where he subsequently died.
