NOTABLE CANBERRANS TO BE COMMEMORATED
A new initiative to name suburbs, streets and parks after Canberrans who have made a significant contribution to the community has been announced by Chief Minister Jon Stanhope.
Mr Stanhope said it was important that notable Canberrans were better commemorated and recognised in their own home town.
“We are calling on peak bodies, universities, sporting organisations, local historians and the Canberra community to come forward with their nominations.
“Historically, Canberra’s place names have been selected on a national basis, to ensure that the national capital of Australia reflected the history of all Australians. While some Canberrans have been commemorated as part of this process, it is important that we identify more of those individuals who are special to us as a community.
“The Centenary of Canberra is just around the corner, and over the last 95 years Canberra has developed its own impressive history. It is important to see a much greater recognition of this in the naming of Canberra’s streets and public places.”
Further information and nomination forms are available from the ACT Planning and Land Authority’s web site www.actpla.act.gov.au or from the Authority’s customer service counter at 16 Challis Street, Dickson. Nominations will be considered by the Placenames Committee and endorsed nominations will be added to the Nomenclature Database for future commemoration.
