‘Keys to Canberra's History' Now Available Online - 1000 Days to Centenary
Wednesday, 16 June, 2010Centenary of Canberra Senior Manager Sarah Hitchcock has today announced that the popular Keys to Canberra’s History, a series of five history booklets which explore Canberra’s early history as the national capital, are now available for download from the Centenary of Canberra website.
“The Keys to Canberra’s History booklets were officially launched in late 2009 and a limited print run was undertaken to supply all Canberra libraries and schools with the valuable history resources,” Ms Hitchcock said.
“However, the interest from the Canberra public has been overwhelming and the Centenary of Canberra unit has arranged for PDF versions of the booklets to be available to download for free from their website to cope with the demand.
“Today marks exactly 1000 days until Canberra turns 100 and I am pleased that all Canberrans can now access the booklets to read, either online, at school or in an ACT public library.
“With the celebration of Canberra’s 100th birthday drawing nearer, now is the perfect time for all Canberrans, and in fact all Australians, to learn about and appreciate the historical moments, people and decisions that led to the creation of the new national capital.
“I encourage everyone to read the fascinating history in these booklets and enjoy the images depicting the birth of the nation’s capital,” Ms Hitchcock concluded.
The booklets have been written by three well-known and respected Canberra historians – Centenary Advisor Dr David Headon, Mr Greg Wood and Mr Ian Warden.
The series includes:
• Canberra – Crystal Palace to Golden Trowels, Dr David Headon;
• Canberra – Think of it! Dream of it! In six snapshots, Mr Ian Warden;
• Canberra – The Community That Was, Mr Greg Wood;
• Canberra – Maps and Makers, Mr Greg Wood; and
• Canberra – Those other Americans, Dr David Headon.
The PDF booklets are available on the Centenary of Canberra website at www.canberra100.com.au.
