Dollars for Dili

‘It is better to give, than to receive’

As part of the Centenary of Canberra program we want to give a gift to our Friendship city Dili. The purpose of this gift is to enhance the capacity and education of the youth who will be the future leaders of this young nation. We are appealing to you, the Canberra community, to join us in raising funds for Dili, East Timor our friendship city.

Two projects have been identified for delivery with the money raised.  Project one aims to build the capacity of young people in Dili and project two aims to enhance education opportunities for young women and girls in Dili. Excellent progress has been made already on these projects.

Listen to Centenary of Canberra Project Manager, Colette Torrance speak to Southern Cross Radio, Wagga Wagga. Listen here.

Target

If each Canberran was to donate just one dollar to the Dollars for Dili appeal, the $358,000 raised would allow these two positive projects to be realised.

Dollars for Dili was officially launched on 11 March 2011 to mark Canberra’s 98th birthday. On this day the ACT Chief Minister donated $20,000 to start the appeal. Dollars for Dili will run until the end of 2013 with regular updates on project delivery provided on this site.

The ACT Government is proud to be supporting Scouts Australia and Rotary International through the Centenary of Canberra. This project reinforces the power of partnerships working with a common objective.

Among the Centenary of Canberra goals are; implementing quality projects of lasting legacies; building the positive reputation of Canberra as a city and community; and, establishing enduring recognition of Canberra and its role as the capital.

  • Dollars for Dili is representative of these goals and the vision for the Centenary of Canberra.
  • Dollars for Dili draws on the principle that on Canberra’s Birthday, ‘it is better to give, than to receive’.
  • The Dollars for Dili appeal is aimed at building the capacity of young people in Dili through two projects.
